Feasibility Study for Gasification of Poultry Litter and Animal Carcass Tissue

Project lead: Investment Agriculture Foundation

Project description: B.C.’s poultry and abattoir industries are looking for more environmental sustainable and less costly ways to dispose of poultry litter, spent hens and specified risk material. The Investment Agriculture Foundation and the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands are trying to determine appropriate technologies to use in case of emergencies resulting from mass-animal mortalities. These and other interested groups have come together to investigate if gasification presents a feasible technology solution to these issues.

Anticipated completion date: October 2010

Survey Methodology to Quantify Types and Volumes of Solid and Liquid Organic Biomass Suitable for Bioenergy Production

Project lead: Ministry of Agriculture & Lands

Project description: Agricultural, municipal and forestry activities create organic waste suitable for bioenergy production. To date, the quality, flow rate and suitability of this biomass for bioenergy production are largely unknown. This project willresultin creation of survey tools and a detailed delivery methodology to enable users to collect solid and liquid organic biomass data and accurately assess opportunities for bioenergy production. To ensure the practicability and accuracy of the surveys tools and detailed delivery methodology, both will be ground tested in the City of Burnaby and Township of Langley.

Anticipated completion date: March 2011
