Biodiversity

Biodiversity is defined as the variety of all life. It includes all species from bacteria, viruses, and fungi to grasses, forbs, shrubs, trees, worms, insects, amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds, and mammals

Biodiversity depends on the habitats and the natural processes, such as water and nutrient cycling, which support all forms of life.

Biodiversity also includes all agricultural crops, livestock and yes, even people.

B.C. is one of the most biologically diverse provinces in Canada as it has:

  • 109 species of mammals
  • 353 species of birds
  • 2093 species of vascular plants

  • 729 species of mosses

  B.C. is home to:

  • 63% of Canada's insect species
  • 73% of Canada's mammal species
  • 78% of Canada's bird species

A Biodivesity plan is an assessment for farmers and ranchers who wish to increase their understanding of biodiversity and what it means to their operations. Managing for biodiversity ensures that agricultural lands can continue to receive the benefits provided by natural systems.
